Covey Demonstrates The Speed of Trust
Noted author and business leaders Stephen M.R. Covey visited the Neeley School of Business on February 4 to demonstrate the importance of credibility in business. He met with small groups of undergraduate business students and MBA students for in-depth sessions and Q&A. He then spoke to more than 300 business men and women, faculty, staff and students, and signed copies of his book.
In his presentation, Covey emphasized that trust is not a “soft” skill, but a tangible economic driver of success.
As revealed in his book, “The Speed of Trust,” Covey pointed out four cores of credibility: Integrity, Intent, Capabilities and Results. He also revealed how trust spreads, like ripples in water. The five “Waves of Trust” are: Self Trust, Relationship trust, Organizational trust, Market Rust and Societal Trust.
Covey said the way to make trust work is:
- Start with yourself: How do you perceived your propensity to trust and do others perceive it?
- Add your analysis by considering:
- What is the job/opportunity?
- What are the risks?
- What is the credibility of the person(s) involved?
- Use your judgment in determining when and how to extend Smart Trust.
